boiohaemum...1973 volkswagen. fantastically imperfect. a superstar.
in the summer of 2006 boio and i drove the interior of America. and not to oversex the description as if to liken America's backyard to that of siberia or the aussie outback, but look at what's what: half of americans live on the coasts far removed from interest or knowledge about what lies in the middle, the land where i live. so boio and i spent much of three months rolling the roads many have never seen, embracing home more than ever.
i slept in him, ate meals in him. read books, wrote poems and essays and blog entries and made photographs and water color paintings and sketches. the writing, and maybe the photos, were meant to one day become a book that would update the genre of the american road laid by kerouac, steinbeck, heat-moon. maybe that will come to fruition, maybe not. but nothing and no one can ever deny the dreamy adventure i lived with my faithful boio in the summer of '06...
11,500 miles of mountains, fields, cities, villages, and desert, canyon, rain storms and a ridiculous many more moments of being that, for better or worse, no one but me will ever ever know. |
